Paper.li, the product of Swiss startup SmallRivers, organizes the content drawn from shared Twitter links into an easily-digestible newspaper-like layout in a Web browser. This is similar to the iPad’s ‘Flipboard’ but is accessible from any web-connected PC.

Congratulations to the New Britain Herald for being named New England Newspaper of the Year by the New England Newspaper & Press Association in its circulation category.

According to the association, the Herald received high marks for the quality of reporting and writing, design and photography, headline writing, sports coverage, the quality of editorial argument and variety of voices and perspectives on the editorial pages.

For instance, the On the Fly sports column is a summary of the past 24 hours in sports.  What is important to note is that it reads like a blog post in that they don’t simply report the news but offer opinions and suggestions – not unlike a blogger.  The column also looks like a blog post – a narrow column that stretches the length of the page – and even includes graphics.  They often put their subjects name in bold which makes it look like a hyperlink.

In other print news, the Meriden Record-Journal has decided to sell its printing presses and use printers in Springfield as a cost cutting measure.  This will result in layoffs for about 45 distribution workers. Wonder if any Record-Journal staffers know of any other cuts (perhaps editorial?) coming down the pike….?

According to the Courant, nine companies have contacted the officials on the two failing newspapers but no offers have been given.  The meetings between the officials were aimed at bringing buyers forward.  Now that several have expressed interest in the two papers the state will most likely step away from the negotiating table.

No, not that kind.

The kind that’s even worse.

The AP is reporting that two of Detroit’s daily papers are cutting home delivery to three days per week.  The Christian Science Monitor is now entirely web-based.  Many major newspapers (such as the Courant) are encouraging readers to seek further information on print articles to visit their own websites. 

With two of Connecticut’s dailies failing and several others experiencing extreme cuts to their workforce, it is evident that the progression towards the internet is gaining steam.  This must be on the mind of every major newspaper publisher.  For each decision that they make they must ask themselves how it will impact their online product.
