Rowland to Host at WTIC-AM

The Governor is back on the airwaves.

WTIC-AM has announced that former Governor John Rowland will be hosting his own show at the station. The show will air from 3 to 6 p.m. on WTIC 1080. Co-hosting with Rowland will be Rev. Will Marotti, senior pastor at New Life Church in Meriden. The pair has a 1-year contract with the station.

Apparently the folks at WTIC were impressed with Rowland when he went on the air for a few days in the July. Rowland has been in talks with WTIC for months.

From WTIC-AM’s press release:

Rowland and Marotti will focus on and talk about local issues that affect our towns and state, including the elections coming up this fall. The show won’t be all politics as the pair plan to tackle overcoming adversity and dealing with life’s challenges; they won’t be afraid to discuss issues that affect everyday life. With a call in format anything goes and Rowland and Marotti bring the candor and experience of 25 years in public life and 25 years of ministry experience.

Colin McEnroe, who inhabited this time-slot for a dozen years at WTIC, believes the show will be a success.

Hladky’s Back

Actually, Greg Hladky never went away – he was just unceremoniously laid off by the New Haven Register last March after a couple decades covering state government. We’ve been happy to see his byline show up in the New York Times’ “Connecticut” section, and this morning we heard him on WNPR’s “Where We Live”, hosted by John Dankosky, discussing government corruption along with “Only in Bridgeport” blogger Lenny Grimaldi. Greg was also featured in the Governing magazine article that we linked to earlier this week.
In addition to the Times, Greg is also writing for the Boston Globe and Connecticut Magazine. Greg was never one to “fall in love” with the people in power and for that reason, consistently asked tough questions. Good to know he’s still out there asking them.

Newspaper Auction

Talks between state legislators and the Commissioner of Economic Development have not materialized any offers for the Bristol Press and New Britain Herald.

According to the Courant, nine companies have contacted the officials on the two failing newspapers but no offers have been given. The meetings between the officials were aimed at bringing buyers forward. Now that several have expressed interest in the two papers the state will most likely step away from the negotiating table.

Legislature to the Rescue?

A group of state legislators (as well as AG Blumenthal and Gov. Rell) are working with the Department of Economic and Community Development to try and save the New Britain Herald and Bristol Press.

It is great to see legislators fight to keep these papers alive. However, when state government is looking to cut spending, it may be difficult to keep these institutions afloat.
