The union SEIU 32BJ attempted to buy a large ad in the Hartford Courant criticizing the newspaper’s decision not to renew a contract with the paper’s longtime cleaning service. However, the Courant chose not to accept it. Employees of the company Capitol Cleaning will lose their jobs after the company lost a competitive bid for the contract to clean at he Broad Street HQ. Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates will be this year’s Robert C. Vance Distinguished Lecture speaker at CCSU. The lecture will take place on Tuesday, November 8, at 7:30 pm in Welte Auditorium on the CCSU campus in New Britain. Admission is free but tickets are required. Gates is the only secretary of defense in U.S. history to be asked to remain in that office by a newly-elected president.
