Big Get for Back9

Ahmad Rashad is leaving the Golf Channel and its Morning Drive Show for Back9Network, based in Hartford.  Rashad is an Emmy Award-winning sportscaster and former NFL receiver. Dan Haar of the Hartford Courant has more about the signing and the network’s effort to get a deal with a major cable carrier.

Colli Lands On His Feet

George Colli

George Colli has been hired fulltime by NBC CT and named to the Troubleshooters Investigative Unit. He joined the station in December on a freelance basis after two years at Fox CT. After covering the past year’s big stories (Sandy Hook shootings and Boston Marathon bombings to name a few) he is now a fixture at WVIT-TV. Great guy – well deserved.

New Publisher at CT Mirror

While The Laurel was vacationing…Brett Orzechowski was named CEO/Publisher of the CT Mirror. More from The Mirror:

Orzechowski previously taught journalism at Quinnipiac University, with an emphasis on reporting stories using nonlinear, interactive digital media and public affairs reporting with a focus on data and analytics. A North Haven resident, Orzechowski was co-creator of the Media Innovation Collaborative (MIC) at Quinnipiac, an interdisciplinary effort by the Schools of Business and Communications designed to equip students with multimedia and entrepreneurial skills. Earlier, he was a digital editor and producer at the New Haven Register with 15 state, regional and national awards to his credit.

It’s Official: Al Carl News Director at 8

Al Carl 1Last week’s  rumor is today’s news – with Erik Schrader leaving as WTNH’s News Director, Managing Editor Al Carl is moving up to take his place after 15 months at the station. From the official press release:

Carl is not new to the position of News Director. He has led newsrooms in Savannah, Huntsville and Omaha. He started his television career as an anchor/reporter and producer in markets in Nebraska and Iowa before moving into management. Carl has worked as an Executive Producer, Managing Editor, and Assistant News Director in multiple cities, including Saginaw, Albany, and two stations in Kansas City, Missouri.

The rowdy New Haven mayoral race will be featured on Wednesday, August 28th when NBC Connecticut hosts a Democratic primary debate. The debate, co-sponsored by the New Haven Independent, will be broadcast live on NBC Connecticut and streamed on NBC Connecticut.com from 7-8 pm.  It’s taking place at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven and will be open to the public. NBC Connecticut’s Gerry Brooks will moderate the forum and panelists will include Paul Bass from the New Haven Independent, Shahid Abdul-Karim, from the New Haven Register, and a representative from La Voz Hispana .

The Primary takes place September 10th.
