The Word Space

Connecticut Post reporter Ken Dixon is the first person I ever heard refer to the state capitol as the “hyperbolic chamber.”

As someone who has covered the capitol for years, Dixon has heard it all, but in a column this weekend he notes he has heard some words and phrases so often they have become cliche.

Dixon’s dictionary of over-used phrases will also sound familiar to anyone who has spent time on a corporate conference call.

When CT Mirror reporter Keith Phaneuf writes about the budget it’s worth reading.

Phaneuf has spent most of the last twenty years studying the process and the budget document itself line-by-line. The Mirror has published the first in a multi-part series from Keith that traces Connecticut’s fiscal problems back 80 years and predicts several decades of tough decisions ahead. A situation that could have a major impact on the state’s economy and quality of life.

The Phaneuf series also marks a continuing effort by the Mirror to leverage the expertise of its reporters to produce stories that have an impact on public policy.

Perna Retires

Nick Perna, one of the go-to economists for Connecticut reporters covering economic and business stories, is retiring.

Perna is stepping down after 15 years with Webster Bank. Over the years he has established himself as a reliable source of information on a subject that can be hard to explain no matter which medium reporters are working in.

MTM Remembered

Actress Mary Tyler Moore, who died last week at age 80, was buried Sunday at a cemetery in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Over the weekend a number of former local TV news reporters – all women – wrote about their memories of Moore and her iconic role as the associate producer of the nightly news at WJM-TV in the Hartford Courant.

Included in the list of writers, Gayle King, Diane Alverio and Duby McDowell.

Law and Order, FOX

The long-running crime series Law and Order is planning an episode based on the case of former Fox News president Roger Ailes.

The man behind Fox’s success was forced to resign last year after Gretchen Carlson of Greenwich – a veteran Fox host – filed a sexual harassment suit against him.
