This week on March 7th, our Chief Meterologist, Brad Field will celebrate his 30th anniversary here at WVIT. His first day on the job in 1983 was just a week after the highest rated television show of all time aired: the series finale of M*A*S*H.
That’s a lot of snow, rain and sun under his belt. Wow.
Brad earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Lowell Tech University in Lowell in 1978 (it is now U-Mass, Lowell). His internship at Weather Services Corporation (WSC) in Bedford, MA led to his first job. While interning during February 1978, the Blizzard of ’78 struck. The area was paralyzed with up to 4 feet of snow! His performance during the Blizzard earned him a job at WSC after he graduated in May. He worked there for a year as an Operational & Broadcast Meteorologist.
From 1979 to 1983, Brad served as a Meteorologist at WLNE-TV in Providence, RI (formerly WTEV, New Bedford, MA). He says he landed that first TV job without any experience because “News Director Peter Leone liked ‘something’ in my personality”.
In March 1983, Brad moved from Providence to West Hartford, to be Chief Meteorologist at WVIT-TV (now NBC Connecticut). He’s been manning the maps here ever since.
Over those 30 years, he’s covered every possible weather event in New England – bringing the information hundreds of thousands of viewers. He received individual honors for his coverage of Hurricane Gloria in 1985 (New Haven Register), and the “Blizzard of 1996” (Associated Press). He’s been part of the weather team that has received numerous other team honors and awards including an Emmy for Hurricane Irene in 2011.
He was honored with a Silver Circle Emmy in 2010.
