On Calls for Resignation

Twice in the last two weeks, the Hartford Courant and Courant columnist Kevin Rennie have called for the resignation of a member of the Malloy administration. A Courant editorial strongly suggested it is time for the commissioner of the DMV to go and Rennie suggested now is a good time to replace DECD Commissioner Catherine Smith.

We note that both are still on the job. We also note that not so long ago a Courant column or editorial calling for the resignation of a top state government official would lead to a media death watch outside the office of the target. That no longer is the case.

There are many reasons for this, but chief among them is the dilution of the power of a single news organization to dictate the agenda.
