Frank Deford of Westport is out with a new book. It is a collection of his 36 years of Wednesday morning commentaries on NPR.

The book is titled “I’d Know That Voice Anywhere.”

In 1980, riding the crest of his well-known writing for Sports Illustrated, Deford was hired by NPR and has been contributing weekly commentaries ever since. A Poynter article on the book reveals how Deford taught himself to write short for radio.

A decade earlier, at the height of Sports Illustrated’s influence in American sports journalism, Deford’s long form sports stories were a highly anticipated regular feature of the magazine along with the “paintings” of LeRoy Neiman.
