For most of her career as a columnist, former Hartford Courant writer Helen Ubinas has been the type to write her columns based on reporting she has done in the field.
She now writes for the Philadelphia Daily News and her latest column is sure to get national attention. Less than 48 hours after the shooting in Orlando, Ubinas drove to a Philadelphia gun shop and bought an AR-15 in seven minutes – with hardly any questions asked.
Her point being that it is too easy to buy a military style assault rifle in this country and until that changes the likelihood of another mass shooting is greater than it should be.
The AR-15 has become perhaps the most controversial gun in America and earlier this month it was the subject of a report featured on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO. The report leaves no doubt as to how powerful the weapon is and includes an interview with one of the original designers of the M-16 which the AR is modeled after – who makes clear this weapon was never meant to be used by civilians.
