“Governor” Davis Signs Off

Mark Davis was a force at the state capitol. He covered politics and government for WTNH starting in the late 80s, having joined Channel 8 as an anchor after a successful radio career in Boston. Indeed, he brought an anchorman’s flair for the dramatic to his coverage. He was always the first to ask a question at a press conference; he was no shrinking violet. But he  was also no Ted Baxter. Some of us who simultaneously covered the capitol  confessed that if we were not reporting on the 6pm news ourselves we were likely to tune in to Mark’s report to get the latest.

Mark once said that he tried to learn as much as he could about a story and would then figure out what 90 second amount of information was the most important to report. While that sounds obvious, some take the time to learn just 90 seconds worth.

Here’s a letter Mark issued today:

Dear Friends;
As you may know, I have been on an extended leave of absence from work since mid March because of the pandemic.  Because I can see no safe path back to work for a man of my age and risk factors I have decided to retire from my position at News 8/WTNH.
I would like to thank my co-workers past and present and especially Photographer Joe Sferrazza for helping me look good (in many ways) over the past 36 years.
Most of all I would like to thank the viewers for their continued support over the decades.
On a personal note;  for the first time in more than 50 years I was able to stay home on election night and watch a movie.  It was great!
Best wishes to all and stay safe.
