In this second summer of our Covid discontent, Major League Baseball put on a game in an Iowa cornfield to help us escape for a few hours.

The Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees on a diamond cut from the corn near the set location of the 1989 movie Field of Dreams. Tim Anderson, the White Sox player who hit the winning home run, admitted he has never seen the movie.

CBS News This Morning, led by former WFSBer Gayle King, is changing its line-up.

In a move some have compared to Good Morning America’s hiring of Michael Strahan, CBS announced this week that Nate Burleson will replace Anthony Mason as morning co-anchor. Burleson is a former NFL player and commentator for CBS Sports. Mason, a long-time veteran of CBS News, will become a full time culture reporter, a role he has excelled in for years.

The Laurel notes that it is always important to keep track of who fills in when regular hosts go on vacation or assignment, because fill in opportunities are often de facto* auditions. Burleson was a fill in host earlier this year.

CBS This Morning plans a move to a Times Square studio in a few weeks.

Using the “according to six people familiar with the situation” crutch, The Daily Beast is reporting that MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow is considering leaving MSNBC when her contract expires next year.

The Beast goes on to report Maddow is unlikely to go to another network, but is said to be more interested in starting her own media company, or pursuing streaming and podcasting alternatives which would give her more flexibility than a nightly show.

It is time to start noticing who fills in for Maddow in the coming months.
