The unscrupulous Alden Capital, which is trying to dismantle a number of newspapers including the Hartford Courant, received the 60 Minutes treatment last night. Correspondent Jon Wertheim explored to what extent democracy shrinks when local papers are extinguished. He profiled a paper in Pottstown, Pennsylvania that once had a bustling newsroom and now consists of a single reporter working from home. A poignant scene showed the Pottstown reporter trying to reach Alden President Heath Freeman at Freeman’s expansive Hamptons summer house. He was turned away.
