Big Bet

CNN’s big bet on the what it sees as the future of video journalism launches today.

CNN+ is the network’s new streaming service. The network is asking subscribers to pay $5.99 a month(there’s an early offer of $2.99 a month) for live news, new shows with well known hosts, and short newscasts meant to be accessed anytime, anywhere, according to the user’s schedule. And there’s Anthony Bourdain – in a move reminiscent of public radio’s long posthumous commitment to re-runs of the Car Guys(and I’m sure he would not mind me pointing that out).

As you know, all the original major broadcast networks now have streaming channels. Aside from the subscription model, what makes CNN+ different is the creation of a full schedule of original programming available only on the service. Also accessible on the user’s time frame. We’ll wait to see if anyone is buying.
