Back in 1961, up and coming TV reporter Dan Rather, reportedly tied himself to a tree while covering Hurricane Carla to show the power of the storm and deliver a first hand account of what was happening to viewers of KHOU. He would later go on to anchor the CBS Evening News and after that develop a large Facebook following as a practicing news commentator now in his 90s.
With that as background, as Rather might say, local and national reporters are routinely sent out into the middle of dangerous storms as they warn viewers not to do the same thing. The genre has spawned an entire network known as the Weather Channel.
If you ever find yourself tied to a tree in a hurricane this opinion piece from Poynter.org offers further justification: Why Jim Cantore Matters.
