There is no doubt the purchase of the Manchester based Journal Inquirer by Hearst Connecticut Media ends one era and begins a new one.

However coverage is enhanced or diminished in coming years, no matter how delivery methods might change, or whether the Hearst purchase of the JI ends the Hartford Courant’s long-time domination of the Connecticut news market, it is certain that the JI  has left a lasting mark on the history of journalism in Connecticut.

The sale of the JI comes about two years after the death of its long-time publisher Elizabeth Ellis who broke ground in many ways as a businesswoman and a newsroom leader. We hope the team at Hearst Connecticut, stocked as it is with former Courant reporters who used to look down on the JI, can put those prejudices aside and carry on the tradition of local coverage the paper has been known for.
