Throughout his long career in radio and television, Charles Osgood would often tell the story of his time as general manager of WHCT, then channel 18, in Hartford, Connecticut.
At that time, WHCT was the first pay television channel in the country. He would always tell the story with humor and humility. The station failed and he landed a job at ABC Radio in New York. A few years later he moved to CBS, first as a radio reporter and anchor and eventually as the television anchor of CBS Sunday Morning and as an anchor of the Sunday evening newscast which ran just before 60 Minutes.
Osgood died Tuesday at his home in New Jersey. He was 91.
Listeners to Hartford radio may specifically remember him as the host of the CBS World News Round-up and the Osgood Files, a daily commentary that often offered the news in rhyme.
