Boston Globe opinion writer Kimberly Atkins Stohr is arguing the way to restore trust in news organizations is to revive the position formerly known as “public editor” or “ombudsman.”
The role was popular in the ’80s and ’90s and was a means for large newspapers to hold their own reporters and editors responsible for their work through transparent critique.
While the concept sounds good on paper, the fact is, most newspapers and most news organizations do not have the budget to pay a public editor and if they did they would likely spend it somewhere else. So, yeah but…
