We don’t often directly cover politics on The Laurel, but this op-ed piece is big news.
Former Republican State Senator Mark Nielsen is not only refusing to vote for Donald Trump, but has announced he will vote for Kamala Harris for president. The headline on this CT Insider op-ed piece is- “I Was A Republican State Senator. I’m voting for Harris.”
When he served in the state legislature Nielsen was a pro-choice, fiscal hawk. By the end of his piece he concludes – after a three count indictment of Trump – that Harris is a centrist and the only rational choice in this year’s presidential election.
This is not the sort of endorsement that will change the outcome of the election, but it is an example of a thoughtful person making a decision based on evidence rather than loyalty to a party or person.
