WFSB-TV has asked permission to install its Doppler weather radar system, a crucial public safety tool used by meteorologists, at the top of a 110-foot tall tower located on Avon Mountain. But some residents in the area are worried it could be bad for their health and are opposing the station’s proposal.

According to a report from WFSB cited by The Hartford Courant, the Doppler radar emits an electromagnetic radiation that is regulated by the federal government because of its potential impact on people’s health. WFSB insists that the radar will not hurt anyone and says the amount of radiation would be within the limits set by the federal government.

Residents are organizing their own efforts will likely pool their resources to hire their own expert to examine the radiation issue.
