One of the original anchors of CNN is dead.

Bernard Shaw was 82 years old. He was a lead anchor for CNN for twenty years, until his retirement. Previously he had worked for CBS and ABC.

He was known for a straight delivery that was deliberately absent emotion. In one interview he said, the more intense the story the more he concentrated on controlling his own feelings. To do otherwise he said, would be a “disservice to the audience.”

He is best known for his live coverage of the first Persian Gulf War where he reported from Baghdad on the opening night of the American bombing campaign and for his questioning of Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis in a 1988 debate.
