The fallout from Sunday’s management shake-up at The Washington Post has all the elements of a slowly developing debacle.
On the heels of a story published Thursday morning by the New York Times; National Public Radio and the Times broke another story late Thursday that shows efforts by the Post’s CEO Will Lewis, to use all the leverage at his disposal to keep his own name out of the news.
According to NPR media reporter David Folkenflik, Smith offered him an exclusive interview about his future plans for the Post if Folkenflik would drop any coverage of Smith’s ties to a British phone hacking scandal. The same story appears to have played a role in Sally Buzbee’s departure as the Post’s executive editor on Sunday night.
