By the end of this week we should have a clearer picture of how many Hartford Courant employees have elected to take the company’s buyout offer.

More importantly, we’ll know which retirement applications management has accepted.

As we reported last week, sources have confirmed for us that political cartoonist Bob Englehart, deputy editorial page editor Tom Condon, Java columnist MaryEllen Fillo, art critic Frank Rizzo, consumer columnist Kevin Hunt and columnist Jim Shea have all applied for the retirement incentive.

We have also learned as many as three of the Courant’s top news photographers may be willing to move on.

This news comes as the Courant advertises for videographers sending a clear signal that the paper’s staff contraction comes with a simultaneous investment in the talent necessary to compete at a higher level for the Internet news audience.
