Have you heard of the news app Watchup?

It lets you build your own newscast, based on available content, for viewing on your phone or tablet.

Now, Fox CT, is part of the Watchup line up after Tribune Media signed a partnership deal with the app company. In addition to Fox CT, the deal involves local stations in almost thirty local markets.

Fox CT newsroom employees have voted in support of unionization.

It’s the second time in the last two years there’s been an attempt to organize the small staff at channel 61. The first vote failed. The final vote this time was 35 to 17.

From CNN to Tribune

A new member of the management team is joining Tribune Broadcasting from CNN.

Bart Feder, who served as vice president of programming for CNN until 2013, has been hired by Tribune with the title senior vice president of news. Tribune owns FOX CT in Hartford. Tribune owns 42 stations nationwide.

Feder has a deep background in news including time as a news writer for 1010 WINS in New York and management positions in television in New York and Boston.

Speaking of Fox CT…

…management isn’t saying anything about it, but the Manchester based Journal Inquirer is reporting that the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians – Communications Workers of America, is trying to unionize Fox CT.

The union is petitioning for an employee election.

The move comes less than a year after Tribune Company, which owns both the Hartford Courant and Fox CT, split into two companies. Tribune Publishing for print and Tribune Media for broadcasting and other outlets.

The request for the election has been filed with the National Labor Relations Board.

New Sets

Work continues on a new set for the Fox CT news team.

The daily news shows are being produced from a temporary set. Laurel readers may have noticed that the Real Story has featured the same guests for the past several weeks. That’s because they’re waiting for the new set to be built out.

The same is true over at WFSB: new set on the way. In the meantime the news shows are being broadcast from the “Better CT” and “Face the State” sets.

Jenn Bernstein Rejoins FOX CT News Team

the laurel pic

FOX CT News has announced that Jennifer Bernstein has rejoined its news team and will begin on the air August 4th. Jenn worked as a journalist for FOX CT News from 2010-2012, and was, in the station’s words, “the station’s first true multimedia journalist.” Her dedication and innovative work garnered her both an Emmy nomination and the honor of being named “Tribune’s Outstanding Employee of 2010”. After she left the station in 2012, Jenn worked for KYW, Philadelphia’s CBS affiliate, where she covered local and national stories, including the Penn State sex abuse scandal and the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. She will anchor FOX CT News at 4 as well as co-anchoring “The Real Story” with Al Terzi. We’re glad to see her back in the market.
