The Hartford Courant’s investigation into the Doc Hurley Scholarship Foundation has won first place in the investigative category from the Education Writers Association’s national reporting contest. The Courant revealed that the foundation, set up to award college to scholarships to needy high school student,s had awarded few new scholarships since 2008. The investigation, prompted by the Courant, resulted in officials identifying more than $200,000 that they allege was misused.

The stories by Vanessa de la Torre and Matthew Kauffman were among 72 winning entries out of the 430 entries in 26 categories.
