On September 11, a Hartford Courant story exploded across the internet.

Around 1:30pm,  the paper posted veteran reporter Ed Mahony’s article on the resignation of a top aide to the criminal prosecutor scrutinizing the Trump-Russia investigation. The story included the information from unidentified colleagues in prosecutor John Durham’s office that Durham’s assistant, Nora Dannehy, had expressed concerns in recent weeks about pressure from US Attorney Barr to deliver results before the presidential election in November.

The story was retweeted tens of thousands of times. It really took off after MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and reporters from Politico and the Washington Post retweeted it.
