As we continue to follow efforts to purchase Tribune Publishing, or parts of it, one status report suggests severe damage has already been done to the news gathering function of the papers owned by the chain.
Poynter reports that staff levels across Tribune have fallen by more than 30% since November of 2019, when Alden Global Capital acquired a 32% share of the company’s stock. Newsroom staff at the Hartford Courant has been cut by 30% during that time period.
The statistics raise serious questions about what potential buyers would be getting for their money other than the reputation of historic brands that are unable to deliver the news product they once did.
