Today, many were talking sports without mentioning the coronavirus. Tom Brady announced that he is leaving the Patriots after 20 years. Speaking of sports, Bristol, Conn. based ESPN has been asked what programming might look like now that sports events are canceled for the time being. According to CNN Business, ESPN’s executive vice president of programming Burke Magnus said that the network’s programming must remain relevant to the impact of coronavirus on the sports world, but must also entertain viewers. Here are the major news updates from today:
- First full day of the temporary closure of all restaurants, bars, gyms, movie theaters and concert halls. (Uber and Grubhub suspended their delivery fee to help support the restaurant industry).
- State unemployment claims reach 30,000 since Friday, according to the Hartford Courant.
- Governor Lamont urged child care centers to stay open for first responders, health care workers and other essential workers.
- As of today, the state received 71 complaints of price gouging. “The attorney general, in coordination with the Department of Consumer Protection, may file suit against price gougers and seek civil financial penalties, restitution, restraining orders and other appropriate relief,” according to CT Mirror.
- For the first time in their history, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods resort casinos will temporarily close as of 8 p.m. today.
- UConn has canceled its May commencement and announced classes will continue online for the remainder of the year.
- All 17 Connecticut State Colleges and Universities will continue online learning for the remainder of the year. Commencement is canceled.
