Growing threats to civic life in the United States include; the demise of local news gathering, a public that generally does not pay attention to what is happening in their own communities – or the country at large – and the tendency for news consumers to seek out niche publications that focus narrowly on a single subject or cater to the political views of their audiences.

In Connecticut, many local daily newspapers have survived, but primarily by being lumped under the single ownership of Hearst Connecticut Media.

The story is not the same across the country and in an opinion essay published by Poynter, Justin Murphy explains the impact the loss of local papers is having on the country as a whole.
