What has the potential to be a long-running battle has opened up between Hearst Connecticut Media Group and its newsroom staff.

Most of the editorial staff has signed on with NewsGuild-CWA and have made a request that Hearst management voluntarily recognize the union as an employee bargaining agent, but according to published reports, Hearst has refused to do so. The Hearst employees are seeking higher wages and many say they are not making salaries that meet cost of living standards in most of the towns they cover.

Hearst owns eight daily and thirteen weekly papers in Connecticut.
