Paresh Jha, Hearst Newspaper’s lead reporter for the New Canaan News, has been fired for embellishing quotes and making up sources. David McCumber, editorial director of the Hearst Connecticut Media Group, issued an apology late Friday afternoon. Blogger and freelance journalist Teri Buhl, who has her own reasons to be skeptical of Hearst and McCumber, says at least one of Jha’s stories has been removed from the paper’s website. Poynter discusses whether this is the right or wrong way to handle the situation.
Awkward: last month Jha won a Connecticut SPJ award in the community non-daily category for his in-depth series, “Enabling Underage Partying,” which focused on parents’ roles in underage drinking.
