Himes Takes Issue

Connecticut Congressman Jim Himes is taking issue with the current White House practice of holding daily news briefings off-camera.

He has introduced a bill that would require at least two televisied briefings a week. It stands little chance of passage since congress is controlled by Republicans and most lawmakers would not normally try to legislate White House communications strategy.

Meanwhile, ABC News has launched a daily web-only program based on the daily news briefing – whether on or off camera – called The Briefing Room. Among those contributing to the webcast is ABC White House reporter Jonathan Karl, who has just been named as the next president of the White House Correspondents’ Association.
