Howard Hesseman, the actor who most memorably played the disc jockey, Dr. Johnny Fever on the CBS show WKRP is dead. He was 81.
Hesseman’s character was the center of the show; the most popular DJ at the station, and the embodiment of the show’s theme song that told the story of a radio personality moving from “town to town, up and down the dial.”
As an actor, Hesseman played many other eccentric roles, but the WKRP character is the one mentioned in the first line of this morning’s obituaries, including the one in the Times of New York.
