Laurie Ledgard, a former reporter for the Hartford Business Journal and other newspapers, passed away on Friday after a long battle with breast cancer. Laurie and I began working as staff reporters at the Hartford Business Journal at almost the same time in early 1998. We worked together for three years covering Hartford business news. She was a kind, big-hearted, old-school journalist, who cared more about news and accuracy than ads. She knew how to be tough without sensationalizing. She had a hilarious, witty sense of humor. I still remember many of her jokes from staff meetings, conversations and her writing. She added perspective to her stories and hit her deadlines with an ease that I admired.
This is such sad news. Laurie was a great journalist and a pleasure to cover a story with. As a guest on Face the State, she added insight and thoughtful analysis. My thoughts and prayers go out to her husband and son.

I was so shocked to hear about this. Laurie was amazing — sweet, fun, funny, a great writer — and most important, a wonderful person. The world is a much smaller place without her.
