Former Hartford resident Les Payne, a columnist with New York’s Newsday for 39 years, died this week at age 76.
Payne grew up in Hartford and attended UConn, graduating with a major in English. After serving in the Army he was hired by Newsday first to cover local news and then to serve as a columnist who traveled the world in pursuit of the story.
