The Day of New London and the Norwich Bulletin are investing heavily over the next eight weeks in coverage of local elections.

The Bulletin kicked the ’14 cycle off last week by hosting the first gubernatorial debate between Dannel Malloy and Tom Foley. The paper has announced it will expand its coverage to local state Senate and House races by creating blogs to allow for more daily coverage of each race in eastern Connecticut. In all, the Bulletin has created 14 blogs. Candidates will be allowed to post their news releases and voters will be allowed to make comments.

The news was announced over the weekend by Ray Hackett, the paper’s editorial page editor, who we learned during last week’s debate, plans to retire after this year’s election. Ray has been covering politics in Connecticut for more than 25 years.

Meanwhile, at The Daythe paper is teaming up with the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut to host a series of debates throughout the region focusing on state Senate and House races. Paul Choiniere, the Day’s editorial page editor, will host most of the debates.

This all means there’s plenty of opportunity for voters in eastern Connecticut to discuss the issues and hear from the candidates.
