Funeral services were held yesterday for Don Russell, a longtime Stamford Advocate columnist who was also one of the country’s first TV anchormen. He died last weekend at the age of 89. A story outlining his fascinating career includes these comments from Advocate Editorial Page Editor Tom Mellana:
“He loved this city like few people have, and while he was not afraid to criticize it, he always looked for the best in Stamford, throughout its history, up into our time of momentous change,” Mellana said. “He never stopped loving this city, and his readers — there were many — never stopped loving him. We will miss him very much — his ties to this city’s, and this paper’s, past almost as much as his gentle presence and good humor.”
