A new Pew Research study of statehouse coverage across the country shows an increase in the number of reporters covering state government since the last similar survey taken eight years ago.
The study also shows some interesting caveats.
- Many of the new reporters on the beat are part-time
- Many work for digital only outlets
- The number of newspaper reporters covering statehouses continues to decline
- The number of TV reporters covering the beat is about the same
- In all, about 1,700 reporters are assigned to cover state politics and government from their capitols
We observe that Connecticut seems to follow the trend identified by Pew, but we would add there has been a slight increase in the amount of TV coverage devoted to state politics including the addition of some new Sunday public affairs shows. The CT Mirror, CT News Junkie and Capitol ReportĀ have an outsized influence on Connecticut political coverage.
