NBC CT has taken the unusual step of pulling a network broadcast from its schedule due to controversy surrounding it.

The station announced late Friday that it will not air Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly this weekend because it includes an interview with conspiracy theorist and talk show host Alex Jones. Jones once claimed that the shooting at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut was a hoax.

The families of the victims have been asking NBC to pull the interview ever since the network began promotion of this weekend’s episode. Statement from NBC CT:

We have considered the deep emotions from the wounds of that day that have yet to heal.

Because those wounds are understandably still so raw, we have decided not to air this week’s episode of Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly. We will continue our local coverage, including a special report on our Sunday 11pm newscast, which includes Sandy Hook parents, Governor Malloy and others who work to affect change around violence and mental illness.

This situation is a major test for both NBC News and Kelly. Her Sunday news magazine is less than a month old. Kelly and the network are being accused of giving a platform to someone who should be ignored. NBC News is suggesting Kelly’s interview will expose Jones as a fraud.
