News regarding Tribune, which owns the Hartford Courant and Fox CT:
According to this article in Crain’s,
Tribune is expected to “win court approval of its reorganization plan early next month at a hearing over several days, giving Tribune a chance to exit bankruptcy by the end of the year. Bankers, consultants and industry executives expect the new creditor-owners to be eager to convert assets to cash by separating and selling some, especially given the diverging prospects for broadcast and print.”
The Courant and Fox61 could be sold to different owners: “Mr. Brandt doubted Tribune would keep the units together because former Tribune executives failed to generate significant profits from the combination of the publishing-broadcast units. ”Nobody is going to replicate that mistake,” Mr. Brandt said. “In the Tribune situation right now it may be a fact that the parts are worth more than the whole.”
We assume that recent buyouts/layoffs at the Courant are part of an effort to make the paper seem leaner and more attractive to a potential buyer.
