We begin today in Atlanta where the Atlanta Journal Constitution recently named Todd Duncan senior editor for hiring and staff development. Many Laurel readers will remember Todd from his time as a police reporter for the Stamford Advocate. According to the paper his mission will be:

“…to improve the newspaper’s hiring and recruiting processes, including tracking candidates and openings, and building on the company’s commitment to create a diverse and talented newsroom.”

A note on today’s headline.

When the late David Brinkley anchored the Sunday morning public affairs show on ABC, he would begin by teasing the day’s show, then pause and say, “and now here’s the news since the morning papers.” It was a nod to the idea that broadcast journalism is supposed to add to narrative created by the morning papers, not simply repeat it.

One Sunday, Brinkley looked into the camera and said, “Now the news since the morning papers.(pause) There isn’t any! We’ll be back with the rest of today’s program, after this…” And then of course, he laughed.
