As part of a project on the state of democracy in America photographer Jeremiah Ariaz photographed over 100 newspapers in rural Kansas. Some were open. Most are now out of business.
And that’s the story. The success of democracy in the United States has always relied on a vigorous free press to inform the electorate about things like – who won the last presidential election for instance.
