If a reporter places a call to a legislator and doesn’t hear back, what’s a guy to do?
The Hartford Courant and its longtime capitol reporter Chris Keating have been accused by state Senator Mae Flexer (D-Danielson) of being “part of the problem.” Keating wrote an article about requiring the wider use of police body cameras. As reported by Daily Ructions, Keating’s first call was to New Haven Senator Gary Winfield (D-New Haven) who has championed this issue. But Winfield didn’t return the call so Keating’s story included only white legislators.
Flexer told the Laurel, “When black and brown voices are not elevated, especially in areas where they are the ones doing the work and are the people feeling the greatest impact, the structures that uphold white supremacy continue. It is incumbent on all of us, especially political leaders and the media, to speak up and ensure their voices are heard. That is what I was pointing out in the Courant article that was published Monday at 7:14 pm.”
