Its CEO has been a critic of charging to view online news content, but Digital First Media, which owns the New Haven Register, is now adopting a paywall.

CEO John Paton announced the transition in a blog post Monday. “We need more gas in the tank if we are going to complete this journey of print-to-digital transformation,” he wrote.

The all-access metered model will allow non-subscribers a set number of free articles per month. Subscribers will receive access to print, digital and mobile content.

We aren’t sure if this will affect all the company’s CT publications which include the New Haven Register, Connecticut Magazine, the Middletown Press, The Register Citizen, the Litchfield County Times and various weekly, monthly and quarterly publications.
