It is unusual for CBS News to air its personnel issues in public so the latest story from the New York Post on the future of anchor Scott Pelley is either fake news, or perhaps a trial balloon.
The paper is reporting plans are underway to replace Pelley as the anchor of the CBS Evening News and move him full time to 60 Minutes where – the paper’s sources suggest – the format is more suited to his style.
Since taking over the CBS Evening News Pelley has tried to elevate the concept of “original reporting” into the story selection and marketing of the broadcast, but perhaps the magazine influenced approach doesn’t work for a half hour recap of the day’s news. The network denies the Post story, but that will not stop it from going viral on media and entertainment news sites over the next 24 hours.
