After a week of coverage of layoffs at ESPN the network is being criticized for not adequately covering its own story.
Media companies are ironically and predictably bad when it comes to public relations. Last week, it took Fox News nearly a full day before it acknowledged on-air that Bill O’Reilly had been fired. Closer to home, we have often seen TV stations quietly remove pictures of axed on-air talent from their websites and explain the departure with the unsatisfactory phrase, “We don’t comment on personnel matters.”
An industry that demands transparency from the rest of the world should lead by example.
