One of the two founding anchors of what became the PBS NewsHour, Robert MacNeil, is dead at the age of 93.
MacNeil and former Texas newspaper reporter Jim Lehrer began The MacNeil/Lehrer Report in 1975. It later expanded to one hour and its original hosts made way for new generations of journalists to follow as anchors of the nightly program.
At its height, The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour drew up to 5 million viewers a night. To this day, in a much more fractured TV environment, it is estimated the program averages one million viewers.
MacNeil was one of the reporters in Dallas the day President John F. Kennedy was killed. He covered the story for NBC News.
