Part-time Chester, Connecticut resident Morley Safer has announced his retirement from CBS News. He is 84 and has scaled back his work over the last four years.
Safer has been a correspondent for the CBS program 60 Minutes for 46 seasons. He is known for traditional, hard-hitting 60 Minutes investigations as well as quirky interviews with characters like Miss Piggy and feature stories on the arts, architecture and the health benefits of red wine.
This Sunday CBS will celebrate his career with a special titled “Morley Safer: A Reporter’s Life.”
Safer’s 1965 CBS News report on the American torching of the village of Cam Ne in Vietnam was named one of the top 100 works of American journalism by New York University. Iconic scenes from the Cam Ne report are often used in documentaries to symbolize American policy failures during the Vietnam era.
“One hundred and fifty homes were leveled in retaliation for a burst of gunfire.”
