Safer Special

Even the untrained ear hears something special in the reporting of Morley Safer.

The long-time 60 Minutes correspondent, who has made his home in Chester, Connecticut, New York City and around the world, retired last week and Sunday night his colleagues celebrated his remarkable career with a one hour special.

The difference is the writing. Television news has become almost cartoonish in its over-reliance on visuals, but while analyzing a Safer piece you hear the writing as at least half of what makes it work. And in the several tributes paid to Safer over this weekend on various CBS broadcasts, he said so – in plain English. The writing, for Safer, was always the point.

The 60 Minutes Overtime page offers a Safer takeover for at least the week. It’s a long way from Furudu.
