So, I first noticed the over use of the word “so” to start sentences while having a business lunch about six years ago.
I was asking a series of questions and the first time my lunch companion used it I thought it was odd. Then he used it again. And again. And again. Every answer he gave me started with the word “so.”
Suddenly “so” was a thing and ever since then I have heard it more and more and particularly on NPR.
So, is used so often on NPR that the NPR standards division actually conducted a mini-investigation into the use of “so” to start sentences.
Last week Fresh Air(one of the biggest offenders) aired its own analysis of the use of “so” and determined it’s not really that the word is being used any more than it used be it’s just that for some reason we are noticing it.
