The family owned Meriden Record-Journal has decided to sell the Westerly Sun nearly 20 years after buying the small Rhode Island paper in 1999.
Rhode Island Suburban Newspapers, which owns other papers in the state, has agreed to purchase the Sun. The sale is effective at the end of the month.
The news was broken in an email to Record-Journal staff Monday:
“The Record-Journal said in a statement to employees that it remains committed to ‘providing quality local journalism in central Connecticut.’
“The sale will allow the Record-Journal to become a stronger company by strategically repositioning to focus on other growth areas,” publisher Eliot White and assistant publisher Liz White wrote…”
